Blog - Medicare Choices?

Knowledge is Power!

Insurance shouldn’t be confusing and neither should your questions. Our blog is here to make it all easier, one post at a time. From understanding personal insurance basics to exploring your options, we’ll break down the topics that matter most to you.

Two Main Paths

Broadly, you have two primary ways to receive your benefits:

Original Medicare: This consists of Part A (hospital insurance) and Part B (medical insurance). It allows you to see any provider in the U.S. that accepts Medicare. Because Original Medicare can leave gaps in coverage, many people choose to add a standalone Part D prescription drug plan and a Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) policy to help cover out-of-pocket costs like deductibles and coinsurance.

Medicare Advantage (Part C): These plans are offered by private companies and "bundle" Part A, Part B, and usually Part D into a single plan. They often provide extra benefits—such as routine dental, vision, and hearing coverage—that Original Medicare doesn’t cover. However, they typically rely on specific networks of doctors and hospitals, and you may need prior authorization for certain services.

Key Factors to Consider

When comparing your options, look beyond just the monthly premium. Consider these four pillars:

Provider Networks: Check if your preferred doctors and specialists are in-network for the plans you are considering.

Prescription Coverage: Each plan has its own "formulary," or list of covered drugs. Ensure your current medications are included and check their cost tiers.

Total Costs: Evaluate the entire cost structure, including deductibles, copays, and annual out-of-pocket maximums. A plan with a $0 premium might have higher costs when you actually seek care.

Lifestyle Needs: If you travel frequently or spend time at a second home, ensure your chosen plan offers the network flexibility or portability you require.

Ultimately, your health journey is unique. Whether you prefer the flexibility of Original Medicare or the bundled convenience of an Advantage plan, taking the time to review your needs annually during enrollment periods ensures you remain protected.
